Downsizing Tips for Moving from A House to A Condo

When you’re moving from a larger space to a smaller location, it is necessary to downsize your possessions to ensure you have the space for everything. It can be a difficult task, but with the right preparation, it can be done thoughtfully and efficiently.

How to Downsize Effectively

  • Start Early: Moving can be very stressful. There are many things you have to do before you begin to settle down in your new home. Downsizing shouldn’t be something that you worry about as you prepare to move. Take the time to go through your items before the moving process begins. Take note of things that don’t get used very often, such as furniture, gym equipment, clothes, and anything else in the home. Decide whether or not these things will have a place in your new home. Sometimes, using the floorplan if you have it available can make the process easier. If you can’t decide on a place for an item, consider decluttering it. That makes one less thing to pack.
  • Prioritize Everything You Own: If you’re particularly sentimental about your items, you may have a hard time getting rid of them. A good place to start is by listing your most essential items out on a piece of paper. This lets you see on paper what you value most. For the items that don’t make your list, gather them up and go over them. Consider how often you use them and when and how you’ll use them in your new home. Separate them into three piles for keeping, selling, and donating.
  • Recycle What You Don’t Need: Don’t just throw away items you’ve decided not to keep. Instead, try to sell them. There are many different websites and apps you can use to help you sell your items and make some extra money. Consider donating whatever doesn’t sell before you move, so you don’t pack items you’ve already decided to declutter.
  • Consider Your New Space: When downsizing, you can also consider changing out some things you have for objects that will be more efficient in the new home. For example, investing in smaller countertop appliances will take up less room in your new kitchen, and a sofa with a pull-out bed can replace your guest bed if you no longer have the spare bedroom space. As you adjust to life in your condo, you might realize there are things you need or things you don’t and can replace your items accordingly.
